Production location China, Gansu

Geography

The China organization is located in Jiayuquan, in the North-West-China province of Ganzu.

The area lies between 38 and 40 N latitude and 98 and 101 E longitude.

Jiayuquan is located in the Gobi desert at 1,500 meter (5,000 ft) above sea level. The nearby Qilian mountain range (direction North-South) allows us to produce at elevations from 700 meter (2,295 ft) up to 2,500 meter (8,200 ft) above sea level.

Climate

The rainfall is very low, 80 mm (3.2 inch) per year, but there is enough water available coming from the 5,600 meter (18,400 ft) high with eternal snow covered Qilian mountain range.

The summers are relatively cool with its day temperatures ranging from 25 30 Celsius (77 86 Fahrenheit), depending on elevation, and its night temperatures of around 15 Celsius (59 Fahrenheit). The winters are very cold, down to minus 35 Celsius (minus 31 Fahrenheit).

The dry cropping season (it is a desert area) and the cold winters are unfavorable for many pathogens and insects hence favoring the phytosanitary conditions for a quality seed product.

For over-wintering crops we have adopted a proven local greenhouse system that makes use of the constant high light intensity, conserving solar heat collected in thick walls that radiate the heat during the night. Unlike in Europe or Northern America where producers normally gamble with freezing out, we anticipate on that type of situation because it is a definite one. That allows us to ensure that the extreme conditions pose a lesser threat.

Infrastructure

China has gone through major changes over the last few years and has drastically improved its infrastructure.

In general roads are good, there is a new highway from Lanzhou to Jiuyuquan and there is an airport close by to ensure safe and fast transportation of the products that we produce for you.

There are flights to Jaiyuquan 5 times a week and hotel accommodations are of good quality.

Communication within Ganzu is easy. The mobile phone network covers almost all of Ganzu and hotels have good phone connections that will allow you to use electronic mail without problems.

The Farmer

The availability of good farmers and experienced labour is not an issue, neither is labor force in this traditionally farming area where people are used to grow mainly grain, corn and their own vegetables.

Its being an agricultural area also means that the farmers understand well how to grow a crop, irrigate and work under the local circumstances.

The average farmer owns 3 to 5 mu, which translates to 2,000 3,350 square meter (20,000 39,000 sqft).

This enables us to accept small orders and to control quality very well.

Some crops, for instance a number of flower species, require isolation to avoid purity problems. Since the area is so big we have the opportunity to select isolated sites.
